Charles “Chip” Esten is an American actor, singer, and songwriter best known for his roles as Deacon Claybourne on Nashville and Ward Cameron on Netflix’s Outer Banks. A Pittsburgh native raised in Alexandria, Virginia, Esten graduated from the College of William & Mary with a degree in economics before launching his entertainment career. He made his theatrical debut in London as Buddy Holly in the West End musical Buddy, a role that led to performances for Queen Elizabeth II and at the White House. He later became a recurring cast member and frequent song improvisor on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, performing alongside Ryan Stiles, Greg Proops, and Jeff B. Davis. His extensive television and film credits include The Office, ER, Big Love, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Jessie, Swing Vote, and Thirteen Days.
As a singer-songwriter, Esten has performed at iconic venues including the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium, and Royal Albert Hall, with appearances at major festivals including Stagecoach and the CMA Festival. He has made more than 170 appearances at the Grand Ole Opry and amassed more than 21 million music streams. In 2018, he earned a Guinness World Records title for releasing an original digital single every week for 54 consecutive weeks. His debut independent album, Love Ain’t Pretty, features 14 songs co-written by Esten and collaborators including Jon Nite, Eric Paslay, Gary Burr, and Leslie Satcher. Beyond entertainment, Esten serves as National Honorary Spokesperson for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk and is a board member and volunteer with Musicians On Call.
